AltoPartners 20th Anniversary : Stephen Dallamore (Global Chairman 2015 – 2020) Perspective

AltoPartners at 20: reflections on a period of purposeful growth and momentum
I often think back to our 2014 Global Operating Committee (OCO) discussion in New York, where we recognised that although we had clear strengths and advantages in the market, change was needed. It was then that we agreed to professionalise the Office of the Chair, amplify the AltoPartners brand, and, importantly, bring in an executive marketing assistant to help us be more visible. It was an important decision at the time as it required OCO to spend money in new areas. This proved to be an inflexion point for AltoPartners, setting the course for the next five years.
One of our early priorities was the global rebrand. This gave us a coherent, contemporary identity and clearly articulated who we were and what we stood for: a partnership defined by global reach, deep local insight, and the flexibility that comes from being independent. That clarity gave us a stronger, more confident voice in conversations with clients and in the broader executive search landscape.
Alongside this, we were very intentional about how we grew. Expansion was about strengthening the partnership in the right places, with the right firms. We focused on attracting high-quality, entrepreneurial member firms that shared our values and brought genuine depth in their local markets. That approach ensured that growth enhanced the partnership rather than diluted it. The third leg of this visibility strategy – and the initiative I am most proud of – was to elevate our communication with all stakeholders. Externally, we worked hard to build a more visible and consistent presence in the market. Internally, we placed equal importance on helping our partners leverage the considerable expertise within AltoPartners. We did this by visiting all the offices, as our biggest strength lies in our ability to connect and collaborate in unexpected ways across sectors and markets. Our clients got access to a depth of talent – which is one of our key value-adds.
I was fortunate to build a Board made up of individuals who were not only committed to the partnership, but genuinely growth-minded. Together, we were able to give structure and direction to our ambitions and, importantly, ensured we followed through. The result was lots of creative ideas and an unprecedented era of growth and momentum.
Looking back, what stands out most is the sense of shared purpose that underpinned everything we did. I feel a great deal of pride in what we achieved during that time, not just in terms of growth, but in strengthening the foundations of the partnership for the future.
As AltoPartners celebrates its 20th anniversary, my hope is that it continues on this path to grow, evolve, and adapt to a changing world, while remaining true to the values, principles, and culture that have defined it from the beginning. Those elements are, and always will be, its greatest strength.
